They are recorded in the 1860 and 1870 US census in Meade County where he is a farmer and cooper and is shown as being born in Pennsylvania in both census. By the 1880 census Gardner is at Louisville in Jefferson County, Kentucky where he is shown as a widower born in Kentucky. In the 1900 census he has returned to Meade County and is in the household of his son Freeman and is again shown as being born in Kentucky. His sons John and Freeman were both coopers in 1880 before both later taking up other occupations.
