James Eldridge and Sarah had four children baptised at Landford, Wiltshire, England between 3 Jun 1781 and 2 Jul 1786.
Their son Henry and Mary had five children baptised at Landford between 1812 and 1828. Henry was an agricultural labourer at Downton, Wiltshire on the 1851 census shown as age 66 born Downton with his wife Mary, daughter Arabella and a grandson Edwin Tutt Eldridge.
A great grandson Silas Eldridge married Hannah Hodder in 1864 at Thorncombe, Dorset and they had three children born at Southampton, Hampshire. Following the death of Silas in 1870 Hannah had a son Joseph and in 1874 she was assulted by his reputed father and made an invalid. The Bristol Mercury of 17 Apr 1875 reported the event as follows;
SAVAGE ASSULT BY A POLICEMAN.- At the Southampton
Quarter Session on Tuesday, a dock police-constable named
Luffman was tried for the assult upon Hannah Eldridge,
when she went to his house last September to endeavour to
make some arrangement with him about a child, of
which he was the putative father. He threw two buckets
of water over her, knocked her down three times, and
kicked her twice, injuring her spine and rendering her
completely helpless ever since, compelling her to give up
her occupation as a laundress and to go into the work-
house, of which she is still an inmate. The prosecutrix
was brought to and from the court in a chair. The
prisoner was found guilty, and the Recorder told him that
such crimes happily were not often heard of and in the South
of England. He should do all he could to stop them by a
heavy punishment, and the prisoner must go to gaol for
twelve months, with hard labour.
