In the 1850 census at Johnston County, North Carolina, United States John Eldridge is shown aged 60 and born in North Carolina. In a petition to the Johnston County Court in 1858 Elizabeth Eldridge, widow of John, said "that her said husband died intestate in the year 1850, in Johnston County leaving him surviving the following children, to wit, Troy Eldridge, Loverd Eldridge, Susan wife of John A Layton, Pherebee wife of Joseph Westbrook, Ann wife of Young J Lee, Betsy Eldridge, Emily Eldridge, William Eldridge, John Eldridge and Katherine Eldridge who are his only heirs at law".
John is thought to probably be a brother of William Eldridge and possibly a brother, or otherwise some how related, to Young Eldridge. These three people, together with their descendents, account for all the Eldridge people in the 1850 census in Johnston County.
