John Slater Eldridge, a bachelor soldier of full age son of Thomas Eldridge, mariner, married on 27 Sep 1838 at Alverstoke, Hampshire, England to Susan Day, daughter of William Day, a shoe maker.
The 1841 census at the No.1 Police Station, Birmingham shows John Eldridge age 21 as a Police Constable and Susan Eldridge, a cook age 21, is also at the Station. They are both shown as not born Warwickshire. When John registerd the birth of his daughter Ellen in July he was shown as a book keeper.
On 5 Dec 1847 at St Nicholas, Rochester, Kent, John Thomas, son of John Slater and Eleanor Eldridge was baptised with John Slater Eldridge being shown as a Clerk on Railway. The 1851 census at Rochester shows John S Eldridge age 30 born Shelwick (or Shenington), Oxfordshire, a Solicitors general clerk with Ellen age 28 born Redditch, Worcestershire and children Ellen age 9 born Birmingham and John T age 3 born Rochester.
John Slater presumably dies between 1851 and 1854 as his wife Ellen marries George Harbon in 1854 and on the 1871 census John T Eldridge, shown as a printer compositor age 23 born Rochester, is with the couple as a son-in-law. John Thomas Eldridge married Annie Timmins on 7 Jul 1877 at Saint David, Birmingham and their two daughters Helena and Lillian were shown as a Music Teacher and a Public School Assistant Mistress respectively on the 1901 census.
