William Joseph Eldridge was born at Battle in Sussex, England on 12 Mar 1879 the son of William Joseph Eldridge and his wife Mary formerly Baker. He was at Battle with his parents for the 1881 and 1891 census and was a boarder in the household of his married sister Sarah for the 1891 census.
William Joseph Eldridge married in 1912 at Tonbridge, Kent to Agnes Annie Collins. Agnes was born in 1896 in Deptford, Kent to Julius Oscar Max Puhlmann and Caroline Williams. Her mother Caroline had first married Frederick James Collins in 1888 and later had a relationship with Julius Puhlmann who died in early 1901. Caroline then had a relationship with Harry Kidd and they later married in 1924.
A Kent newapaper, the Courier of 31 Jan 1919 at page 2, reports that William Joseph Eldridge was summoned to show cause why an order should not be made against him for the maintenance of his wife Agnes and their children, who had lived apart from him since September 1918, and the order was made. The same newspaper reported in the 13 Feb 1920 edition at page 4 that he was charged as being in arrears and that a child had recently died. In this report he is incorrectly shown as William George Eldridge. The same newspaper then reported in the 25 Jun 1920 edition at page 4 that he wanted to alter the order but this was declined.
The 1921 census record for 17 Stanley Road, Tonbridge shows Agnes Eldridge in the household of her mother and step-father Caroline and Harry Kidd with three of her children and a lodger, Thomas Edward Burr. He is also in her household for the 1939 Register and is thought to be the father of her children born in 1920 and later. All of her children from 1913 to 1929 are shown as Eldridge in their birth registration records with their mothers surname being either Collins or Kidd.
Some descendants are known to have migrated to Australia. Cecil Edward and his wife are recorded in Australian Electoral records from 1972 in New South Wales and his wife Dorothy Joan died in Queensland in 1986 and Cecil in NSW in 1998. Gladys Rosemary Garside, nee Eldridge died in Queensland in 1994.
